Feeding

At Little Pressmore Farm we believe that each owner should have the freedom to ensure that their horse is being fed in accordance with their own feeding regime.

Therefore the livery here does not include feed; instead owners can set up accounts directly with the local feed merchants and with our support identify which feeds and in what quantities they would like them to be administered. For our full seven day liveries we then run the accounts, whereas for our full five day liveries we ensure that enough warning is given for them to purchase additional feeds.

All feed is stored in designated feed containers following a stringent stock control procedure where storage containers are fully emptied, if necessary washed out and dried before the new feed is opened and decanted.

We make all feeds up in advance in designated feed buckets. All the horses on the yard are fed at the same time as part of morning and evening stables promoting a calm environment. Covered feed buckets are left outside stables overnight ready for morning stables. When making up feeds root vegetables such as carrots are cut into strips to reduce the risk of choking.

Risk of rodent contamination of horse feed is negligible due to programmed visits from our pest control contractor.

All horses are fed from buckets on the floor or from mangers. No food is decanted by staff onto the stable floor.

Whilst the horses are feeding staff will remain on the yard at all times observing the horses progress. Loss of appetite, difficulty chewing etc. will be brought to the attention of their owners the same day even if it is a one off. Medication will be added to the feed just prior to it being given to the horse in accordance with the manufacturers and veterinary guidance and staff will be vigilant to ensure that medicated feed is consumed.

Alterations in feeding times will be accommodated. Following consultation with the owner to determine their requirement their horse will be given a token feed or distracted whilst the remainder of the horses in our care are being fed. Likewise extra feeds will be given discreetly to prevent other horses from getting upset.

Food requiring soaking will be done so in accordance with the manufacturers guidance.
